Group clash during idol immersion: Sec 144 imposed in Odisha’s Rourkela

Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in Odisha’s Rourkela city after two groups clashed during Ganesh idol immersion procession at Old Station road here last night.

Twenty platoons of police force have been deployed in the city to avoid any untoward incident, informed Rourkela sub-collector.

Due to security reasons, the place for Namaaz prayer on the account of Id-ul-Zuha was changed from Idgah Ground to Jama Masjid here, sources said.

According to reports, there was an altercation between two groups at Old Station road here during immersion procession of Ganesh idols of different pandals in the city last night. The exchange of words tuned violent as the two groups started pelting stones at each other. They also vandalized several shops and set a car on fire during the clash, reports added.

On being informed, police reached the spot and resorted to mild lathi charge to take the situation under control. Normalcy returned after the SP and other senior police officials reached the spot and pacified the two groups.

Police have so far arrested six persons in connection with the group clash.
