Here’s the ordeal of a minor girl raped near police station in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: A 15-year-old girl from Odisha’s Keonjhar district was allegedly raped by a person at an abandoned house near Saheed Nagar police station in Bhubaneswar, an incident certainly raising serious questions over the safety of girls and women, not only in the state but also in the capital city.

A night patrolling team of the Commissionerate Police rescued the victim and arrested the accused, identified as Jagannath Rout, a resident of Telugu Basti under Saheed Nagar police limits in the city.

A case has been registered against Rout, who was sent to Jharpada Special Jail here after rejection of his bail plea by a local court.

According to police sources, the girl had come to Bhubaneswar after a dispute with her family members. She met Rout at Baramunda bus stand and the latter promised the girl to help her by arranging a job for her.

Both later went to Maharaja Picture Palace, a cinema hall here, and watched noon show. The accused also roamed around the city with the girl on his motorcycle.

After having dinner at a hotel near VSS Nagar here, the accused took the girl to a secluded place near the Saheed Nagar police station and allegedly raped her at an abandoned house after consuming liquor which he had bought during dinner.

At around 2 am, a patrolling team of Saheed Nagar police saw Rout while he was trying to flee the spot with his bike leaving the girl inside the house. While a police official detained him, other cops went inside the house and rescued the girl in a critical condition as she was bleeding.

Both the accused and the victim were sent to Capital Hospital for medical examination and the case was handed over to Mahila police station.

After recording the girl’s statement, police sent her to a short stay home. On being informed by police, her family members reached Bhubaneswar and took her home.
