Low turnout of migratory birds in Chilika

The number of migratory birds in Chilika this year has come down by nearly 1.5 lakh as compared to 2013 figure, a bird census at the sprawling brackish water lagoon conducted on Sunday found out. Chilika Birds 1

According to Sunday’s census data, about 7,19,262 winged visitors belonging to 150 species were sighted this year as compared to 8,77,322 last year.

The census was carried out by 20 teams across five range areas of the lagoon.

According to forest officials, the arrival of these birds this year was delayed by a month due to Cyclone Phailin in October last year.

Normally, the migratory birds land in Chilika during October-November every year.
