Nirbhaya scheme to be launched in Odisha’s twin city soon

In a bid to ensure safety of women in twin city Cuttack and Odisha capital, the Commissionerate police is set to launch Nirbhaya scheme.

Nirbhaya scheme will be launched soon in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, said Twin City Police Commissioner YB Khurania on the occasion of International Women’s Day yesterday here.

In this connection, the Odisha government has written a letter to the Centre, which will sanction Rs 135 crore under centrally-sponsored Nirbhaya scheme.

As part of initiating the scheme, 3000 CCTV cameras will be installed in 200 major locations in Bhubaneswar and 100 places in Cuttack under Nirbhaya scheme, Khurania said.

Besides, in view of growing number of violence against women including blackmailing, molestation, deception and social media fraud in the twin city, the Commissionerate police is going to set up the cyber police station, he said.

The Commissionerate police has proposed the State government to set up two cyber police stations will be set up in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. Due to infrastructure and staff shortage issue, the cyber police station will start functioning initially at the energy police stations in twin city. The officials are being imparted training to deal with the cyber crime related cases, Khurania said.

In the wake of recent molestation incident occurred on Patia-Nandankanan road in Odisha capital, we will take steps not to repeat such incident in future, he said adding “Police control room and CCTV camera control room will be merged. With the merger, the location can be traced through the CCTV camera control room after police control room receives information”.

Further, two more cells will be opened in Mahila police station. Proposal has been made for appointment of two special Public Prosecutors (PP) to deal with the issues related to violence against women in twin city. The step has been taken for fast disposal of cases, he said.
