Odisha-based designer among Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence awardees

It is indeed a matter of pride and joy for the state as Odisha-based designer has bagged Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award-2017 conferred upon her last week.
The Bhubaneswar-based ace fashion designer and owner of ‘Dolliz Kasba’ Dolly Parekh bagged the award in ‘Best Fashion Designer’ category.
Parekh was feted along with actor-turned politician Hema Malini, Bollywood actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shoojit Sircar, Zeenat Aman.
“I have been working in the field of fashion designing in Odisha since last 10 years. I thought of promoting state’s famous Pattachitra. I combined Pattachitra with Zardosi which got selected for the award,” Dolly Parekh said.
“My work adorned by Laxminarayan Tripathy was first noticed by Bollywood industry at Los Angeles. Several actresses asked about it. That’s how my work got noticed,” she added.
Aishwarya won the award for the best actress female for her stellar performance in the film Sarabjit while Hema Malini won the award in the category of Kala Shree. Similarly, actress Zeenat Aman was conferred with Lifetime Achievement award.
The awards were presented in Mumbai at a glittering function held at St Andrew’s in Bandra, Mumbai on Friday evening.
Notably, the function was organized by Chitra Productions to commemorate the 148th birth anniversary of the father of Indian Cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke.
We would like to clarify that Dadasaheb Phalke Excellence Award is not same as Dadasaheb Phalke Award conferred by the Government of India for outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian Cinema.
Worth mentioning, I&B Minister Venkaiah Naidu today approved recommendation of Dadasaheb Phalke Award (DSPA) Committee.
Renowned film director and actor Kasinadhuni Viswanath will be conferred the 48th Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2016. The Award consists of a Swarn Kamal (Golden Lotus), a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakhs and a shawl. The Award shall be conferred by the President of India at a function on May 3 at Vigyan Bhawan.
A presenter of classical and traditional art, music and dance, K Viswanath has been a guiding force in the Indian film industry. As a director he has made fifty films since 1965 known for their strong content, endearing narrative, honest handling and cultural authenticity. His films on wide range of social and human issues had great appeal to the masses.
K Viswanath was born in February 1930 at Gudivadain Andhra Pradesh. An ardent art lover, he made a series of films based on varied themes of art, music and dance. His films empathized with courage and frailty, aspirations and convictions, perseverance and distractions, social demands and individual struggle and at the core believed in the goodness of the human spirit.
His contributions have received recognition in the form of Padmashri Award in 1992 for his contribution to film making. He has also been awarded 5 National Awards, 20 Nandi Awards (awarded by the State Government of Andhra Pradesh), 10 Filmfare Awards including Lifetime Achievement Award. His national award winning Swathi Muthyam was the India’s official entry to the 59th Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Film category.
