Odisha CM announces Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia for Sevashram rape victim’s family

Bhubaneswar: Amid widespread protests and condemnation against rape of a Class X student in Malkangiri who later committed suicide, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the next of the kin of the victim.

A communication from Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has confirmed the development.

Kalimela Tehsildar has handed over the cheque to the family members of the deceased at her village MV-29, it added.

Notably, the minor girl of Sikhapali Residential School in the district, was raped by school headmaster following which she killed herself by cutting her wrists.

The 14-year-old girl, who slashed her wrist, was found lying in a pool of blood in the computer lab of the school on Thursday. She was rushed to the hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

The accused headmaster, Biswajit Sarkar was arrested yesterday and four other staff of the school were placed under suspension by the district collector.

The police has also seized a notebook of the victim in which she describes her ordeal. In a note found in her notebook, the girl accused the headmaster of sexually assaulting her as well as other minor girls in the school, police had said.
