Odisha: Ex-gratia for kin of two persons killed by mentally retarded man

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the kin of two persons allegedly killed by a mentally retarded man in Nayagarh district.

He also announced to provide free treatment to the injured persons in the incident.

Notably, two persons were killed and more than 10 people were injured when a mentally retarded attacked the locals early this morning with stick and stones at Odagaon Bazaar in Nayagarh district.

While one person died on the spot, a woman sustained critical injuries in the attack. She was rushed to a hospital, where she succumbed.

The deceased persons were identified as Trilochan Sethi, a security guard, and Madani Pradhan, an elderly woman.

When a team of police led by Odagaon IIC reached the spot to nab the mentally retarded man, the accused also hurled stones at them injuring two police personnel including a woman constable.

Following the incident, the irate locals had blocked the Odagaon road demanding compensation for the families of the victims. The road blockade was removed after the police assured the protestors for compensation to the deceased persons’ families.

An hour after the operation, the Odagaon police arrested the accused identified as Niranjan Mallick.
