Odisha: Seven cops suspended as wanted Maoist flees from custody

Nuapada: As many as seven police personnel were suspended hours after a most-wanted Maoist escaped from their custody today in Odisha’s Nuapada district.

According to sources, Nuapada SP Smith P Parmar placed seven cops, including five constables and two Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI), under suspension on charges “dereliction of duty”.

The suspended cops are Pankaj Tandi, Pushpalata Sunani, Bholanath Majhi, Pantabai Naik, Harishankar Sabar, Laxman Sabar and Madhusudan Majhi.

Earlier in the day, Manoj Madkami, a cadre Maoist of Bargarh-Balangir-Mahasamund Division, had fled from the court of the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Court by kicking and pushing the cops, raising questions over the role of the police personnel.

On being informed, the Nuapada police rushed to the spot and launched a manhunt to nab the Maoist, against whom, the police said several cases were pending against him in Odisha and Chhattishgarh.

Till filing of this report, there was no trace of the wanted Maoist. He was arrested on May 30 this year.
