OHRC asks Odisha govt to pay Rs 2 lakh for girl student’s death in school

Bhubaneswar, Mar 10:

Acting on a petition filed by Advocate Prabir Kumar Das, a division bench of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) today directed the School and Mass Education Department of Odisha Government to pay Rs 2 Lakh as compensation to the parents of Tilottama Patra, who was killed in a wall collapse in the school premises.

The OHRC bench, comprising Acting Chairperson Justice Bira Kishore Misha and Member Bijay Kumar Patnaik, directed the State Government to pay Rs 2 Lakh over and above the amount of Rs 1 Lakh already paid to the parents of the deceased girl out of the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

The overall compensation stands at Rs 3 Lakhs.

The class-VI student of Nimakhandipentha Upper Primary School under Digapahandi block of Ganjam district had sustained injuries after the wall of an under-construction toilet in the school premises collapsed on her on November 16, 2014.

The child breathed her last at MKCG Medical College and Hospital of Berhampur on November 17, 2014.

District Education Officer (DEO) Sanatan Panda had suspended the headmaster of the school Jatia Mallick and issued a show cause notice to the former headmaster of the school for not handing over the charge of the school management to the concerned authorities.
