Protests outside city hospital over reports of kidney sale

Bhubaneswar, May 5:

Following media reports that a woman lured by the promise of ‘big money’, had sold her kidney for a transplant operation, members of Bhubaneswar Bikash Manch (BBM), a city-based social organisation today staged a demonstration in front of Odisha’s high profile Apollo Hospital here, alleging that an illegal kidney transplant operation was conducted there.Apollo Protests

The protesters blocked the Acharya Vihar-Sainik School road for half-an-hour disrupting vehicular traffic. The road was cleared later, following police intervention.

The Manch members led by Ganesh Das and Amiya Pandab shouted slogans against the hospital and accusing the State Government of a love relationship with corporate hospitals.

Das said the police should rescue the victim, Padmini Nayak, from the hospital and make arrangements to replant a kidney in her body.apollo hospital

The Manch members also demanded the State Government to take stringent action against the doctors and management of the hospital who allowed the kidney transplant to take place.

Meanwhile, the police have given a clean chit to the Apollo Hospital and said the kidney transplant was carried as per proper procedure and in consonance with the prescribed rules.
