The preparation for construction work of the chariots begins on the Basant Panchami (Saraswati Puja) day every year.

As per the tradition, three logs of Dhaura tree measuring 12 feet, will be taken to the temple office there the servitors would perform the rituals. The Rajguru (chief priest) of the Puri Gajapati Maharaja and Shrotriya Brahmins (a clan of priests with expertise in Vedic rituals) will perform the rituals.

The slicing of the log will begin on Ram Navami (birthday of Lord Ram).

Keeping in mind the preparations of Nabakalebara (reincarnation) of the Lord, a team of servitors will leave on search for the Daru (special tree trunks with symbols of conch, the chakra (disc like weapons), the mace and the lotus symbol on it) to different forests and places of the state as per tradition.
