ULB polls in western Odisha : SEC receives interim report

OST Bureau
Bhubaneswar, Oct 9:

The Odisha government has submitted an interim report to the State Election Commission (SEC) pertaining to the situation in nine western Odisha districts for initiation of the poll process in 25 urban local bodies (ULBs).

In its report to the SEC on Tuesday, the Urban Development department said a report on situation in the troubled western Odisha was yet to be received from the collectors of nine districts. The director of municipal administration has sought at least a week’s time to submit a complete report to enable the SEC to take a final view on initiating the poll process in the left-out ULBs, official sources added.

The SEC is all set to start the election process during the third week of October after the Puja vacation.

The State Election Commissioner Ajit Tripathy had earlier said that in case the report of the state government on the law and order situation on western Odisha is delayed, it would go ahead with its plan to conduct the polls in the left out ULBs by third week of October as per the Constitutional authority vested in it.

The election process should be completed in these ULBs by end of November, Tripathy had said.

The SEC had also said that since the state government has already decided to accord Sambalpur and Rourkela Municipalities Corporation status, it would like to exclude the proposed corporation while the process for the second phase ULB polls.
