‘Work on Odisha’s Jagannath temple to be over before Nabakalebara’

New Delhi, Aug 12:

Union Culture & Tourism minister Shripad Yesso Naik today assured Parliament that the conservation work of Jagannath Temple in Odisha’s temple town of Puri will be completed before the Nabakalebar festival scheduled to be held in July 2015.

Puri Jagannath temple repairIn a written reply in Lok Sabha, he said that conservation work of protected monuments, including Jagannath temple in Odisha, is a continuous process.

He said the identified works related to the grand Nabakalebar festival such as repairs to Singhdwar Gumuta, Kalasa of Jagamohana and steps on the northern side of the temple have already been completed and other essential repair works will also be completed well before the event. The temple is in a good state of preservation, he said.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is looking after the 12th century temple and is hopeful that major part of the renovation work of the temple would be over before March 2015.
