Chakradhar Paika of Namangada village under Gumma block in Gajapati district who was allegedly under loan burden hanged himself to death yesterday night after suffering recurrent crop losses.

Chakradhar committed suicide by hanging when there was no one in his house yesterday night.

Police today seized the deceased farmer’s body and has sent it for autopsy after conducting inquest.

This is the first suicide by a farmer in Gajapati district this year, reports said.

“Chakradhar has committed suicide due to crop loss and debt burden. He had cultivated crops in four acres of land. He had borrowed about Rs 50,000 for cultivation from individuals. The crop was damaged due to cyclone Hudhud last year. This year he had again borrowed Rs 50,000 from individuals for growing crops. Again his crops were ruined this year due to deficient rainfall. With about Rs 1 lakh to repay his creditors, he was a worried man and was under terrible mental pressure. Unable to find a solution to his problem, he committed suicide,” Niranjan Paika, father of deceased Chakradhar told reporters today.
