Cops arrested for taking bribe not to register case

Kendrapara: Vigilance sleuths today arrested two policemen in Odisha’s coastal town of Kendrapara while taking bribe from an individual assuring him not to register case against him.

As per Vigilance sources, Kendrapara Sadar Police station IIC Nilakantha Prasad Patra and Crime Havildar Debendra Prasad Nayak were caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5000 from one Chinmay Kar where the duo had assured the accused not to arrest him in connection with a criminal case.

Notably, Patra was the investigating officer in a case registered by one Priyambada Panda. Fearing legal action leading to his arrest, the accused approached the IO to consider leniency. However, Patra demanded Rs 10, 000 with an assurance not to arrest him. While Kar coughed up half the deal amount, the officer reportedly kept on demanding the remainder owing which the accused reported the matter to Vigilance (Cuttack division).

Accordingly a trap was laid today and the duo was arrested. The bribe money was recovered from the Havildar who had collected the bribe money on behalf of Patra.

The policemen were arrested and forwarded to court.

Later, house search was also conducted by the anti-corruption wing sleuths to detect disproportionate assets.
