Sambalpur, Oct 27:

The PG students of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Odisha’s Burla continue their strike for the third consecutive day demanding arrest of the main culprits who heckled the attending doctor and ransacked the hospital following the death of a patient on October 24.

The house surgeons of the hospital have also joined the strike since yesterday in solidarity with the PG students.

A delegation of the junior doctors today held discussions with the SP of Sambalpur and the hospital superintendent demanding their arrest.

Meanwhile, the PG students have boycotted their services at the hospital following which the in-patient and the out-patient care has been badly affected.

Notably, the cops arrested four individuals and forwarded them to court yesterday. However, the main accused is still at large.

On October 22, the patient, identified as Himanshu of Atachakipada, was admitted to the surgery ward of the hospital following complaints of chest pain. He was discharged on October 24 after undergoing treatment for three days. However, his relatives brought him back to the hospital once again, barely hours after he was discharged from the hospital after he complained of pain.  Himanshu breathed his last at the hospital.

While the doctors claimed that he was dead on arrival, the relatives complained that doctors didn’t attend to the patient on time and ransacked the hospital in protest.

Both the PG students and the relatives of the patient had lodged complaints against each other at the police station following the incident.
