Woman set afire for dowry in Odisha

A woman with about 50% burns was rescued by the police in Odisha’s Nayagarh district today after her in-laws allegedly set her afire for dowry.

The woman identified as Mama Mohapatra of Malisahi of Narendrapur village under Sarankula police limits was rescued today morning with about 50% percent burns after her neighbours alerted the police on hearing her desperate screams, reports said. The woman has been admitted to the district headquarters hospital here after being rescued.

“Her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law have set my daughter afire after pouring kerosene on her. They had attempted to kill her. They had been torturing her for dowry since long,” alleged victim’s father Narayan Rout talking to reporters at the hospital here.

The accused however, are on the run.
