Prisoner death in Odisha jail: autopsy confirms cardiac arrest

The autopsy report of an undertrial prisoner (UTP), who died under mysterious circumstances in Jharpada Special Jail in Odisha capital on Tuesday, has confirmed that the deceased had suffered cardiac arrest leading to his death.

According to Commissionerate police sources, the autopsy report of the undertrial prisoner report has confirmed the reason of death to be cardiac arrest.

Notably, the body of the 44-year-old was sent to Capital Hospital for post-mortem where the process was videographed.

Benudhar Jena, a native of Madhupur village in Khordha district, was found dead in the jail. He was in the jail since 2011 in a murder case against him.

Alleging foul play, the family members had filed a complaint with the Laxmisagar police station demanding probe into the matter.

As per jail authorities, he was not keeping well and was suffering from fever since past few days. The jail pharmacist had administered an injection on Monday last. However, he was found dead the following day.

The jail staff had denied negligence and said that investigation was conducted as per the guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The death of the UTP had triggered outrage among the jail inmates. Following this, additional police forces were called to prevent any untoward incident.
