Puneeth Rajkumar gives eyesight to four youth

Bengaluru: Power star Puneeth Rajkumar gave eyesight to four persons even after his death. The actor had donated his eyes, which were transplanted in four corneal blind patients at Narayana Nethralaya in Bengaluru.

According to media reports, each eye of the Kannada superstar was used to treat two patients by separating the superior and deeper layers of the cornea.

While the superior layer was transplanted to two patients, who had superficial corneal disease, the deeper layer was transplanted to another two patients diagnosed with endothelial or deep corneal layer disease. The corneal transplant procedures were performed by a team of five doctors on October 30, informed Dr. Bhujang Shetty, Chairman, Narayana Nethralaya.

The recipients were three males and one female, all four patients were aged between 20-30 years from Karnataka. They are stated to be well after surgery.

Usually, two corneas from a deceased person are transplanted into two corneal blind patients. But, the doctors used Puneeth Rajkumar’s corneal tissues to restore vision of four youth.

Puneeth Rajkumar became the third member of his family to donate his eyes after his father Rajkumar and mother Parvathamma.

Following his untimely demise on October 29, family of the actor donated his eyes.

Puneeth Rajkumar, fondly called as ‘Appu’, was the son of legendary Kannada actor Rajkumar. He passed away at the age of 46 following a heart attack on October 29.
