Three members of a family killed in accident in Odisha

Misfortune struck a family as three of their members were killed in a road mishap in Odisha’s Khurda district today.

RANPUR ACCIDENT

The tragic mishap took place at around 12 noon at Benta Square near Chandpur under Ranpur police limits when a truck hit their two-wheeler while crossing over to the other side of the road.

According to reports, three persons including a child were travelling in a moped (OD 02V 6339) when a speeding truck bearing registration number HR 55 X 0629 hit them. Among the dead, a couple is there and their grand daughter.

The deceased have been identified as Shatrughana Sahu (50), Shantilata Sahu (45) and Rupali (04)

While the couple died on the spot, the minor girl was first rushed to Tangi Community Health Centre (CHC) and later to Bhubaneswar as her condition deteriorated. However, she succumbed on her way to hospital.

Enraged locals blocked the National Highway 16 for almost five hours in protest against the accident owing which vehicular traffic was affected. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded on either side of the road.

The locals demanded construction of road diversions and Rs 5 lakh compensation to the deceased.

As the uproar intensified, Khurda MLA Rajendra Kumar Sahu, Ranpur BDO Lagnajit Sahu, Sarankul SDPO T Jagarao Reddy, Ranpur IIC Rashmiranjan Patnaik among other officials reached the spot to pacify the agitators.

The legislator drew the attention of the District Collector to provide Rs 30, 000 as relief to the kin of deceased from the Red Cross fund following which the blockade was lifted.

The bodies were sent to Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital for post mortem. The truck driver surrendered at Jankia police station, sources said.
