First public toilet for transgenders opens in Odisha capital

Bhubaneswar: First public toilet constructed by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the transgenders came up here near Vani Vihar square.

The 10-seat hybrid toilet having one seat reserved for the third gender community was inaugurated by Culture & Tourism Minister Ashok Chandra Panda, Bhubaneswar (north) MLA Priyadarshi Mishra, Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena and Deputy Mayor K Shanti on Wednesday.

With construction of the public toilet, Odisha became third state in the country to have toilet for the transgenders. Bhubaneswar is the third city to have toilet facilities for this section of society after Mysore and Bhopal.

Besides, three more community toilets were also inaugurated at Jalimunda slum, Chiragtola slum and Pandakudia slum. The community toilets have been built for all sections of society including the senior citizens, kids and persons with disabilities.

The community toilets have ramp facility for the divyang persons and low level pan and basin for the children. There are 5-12 seats in each community toilet.

Total 17 public toilets have been constructed so far out of 27 toilets in the project. The target has been set to complete the rest of the toilets by March next year.
