Langur born in Odisha zoo a day after father’s death

Bhubaneswar: Following days long grief gripped Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) on city’s outskirts over a series of deaths of endangered monkey species, the wildlife premises were overwhelmed with joy after birth of a baby langur this morning.

The baby langur was born just a day after its ailing father died at the zoo.

A female Nilgiri langur, the partner of the dead male langur, has delivered a baby langur at enclosure 55 on Saturday morning. The baby is in good condition and mother langur is holding it under her belly, the Nandankanan authorities informed.

The male Nilgiri langur had died at the zoo on Friday following brief illness. He was suffering from diarrhoea and fever for the last couple of days after cyclone FANI.

The langur that was brought to Nandankanan from Chennai’s Arignar Anna Zoological Park in 2017.

The past two days were distressful for the wildlife lovers after death of India’s lone orangutan Binny and a langur on the following day.

However, the birth of this new langur managed to bring smile for millions of animal lovers in the state. With this, the zoo has now two Nilgiri langurs.
