Marvel’s ‘What If’ Finale: More surprises in the store? Here’s what to expect

As Marvel Studios’ ‘What If …?’ Season-1 Finale is all set to premiere on Disney+ tomorrow (October 6), excitement among Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans has reached its peak while speculations are rife that the web series might conclude with multiverse-level actions and events.

The finale is certainly heading towards a grand storytelling with Ultron literally breaking the boundaries of multiverse and attacking the Watcher, the narrator of the series. Though Marvel fans once strongly believed that Doctor Strange is the only character having the capability of interacting with the Watcher, the pre-finale episode has taken them by surprise, the one thing Marvel Studios is always good at.

While the countdown has begun for finale of arguably the most popular animated series of the year, here are the things to expect from the series finale.

Gamora Returns

Marvel has officially announced the return of the first woman ‘Guardian of the Galaxy’ in the last episode of the series. In a poster shared by Marvel Studios on its official Twitter account, Gamora can be seen donning the iconic metal armour which was worn by her adoptive father Thanos during the Infinity Saga of the MCU. She can also be seen holding the Mad Titan’s double-bladed weapon used by him during the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers/Guardians of the Multiverse?

The official trailer of the series had indicated the assembling of various characters from different universes. Peggy Carter aka Captain Cater, Star Lord, Gamora, Black Panther and Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow can be seen uniting, seemingly for the purpose of saving the world/universe in a pose similar to that of the Avengers in Avengers 1 movie (See pics below).

Needless to say, Marvel Studios has mastered the art of drawing parallels in storytelling.

Fans are speculating that the characters may assemble to fight against a common threat, most likely Ultron with all the six Infinity Stones.

Doctor Strange to travel across Multiverse?

The trailer had also featured a very short interaction between the Master of the Mystic Arts and Agent Carter. With Carter’s universe and story in the series set in 1940s and that of Doctor Strange in the modern day, the Sorcerer Supreme travelling across the multiverse to gather allies for help is likely.

The trailer had also showcased a scene featuring Doctor Strange and Thor, both belonging to different universes, standing on a cliff.

Afterall, when your opponent is Ultron with all Infinity Stones, you need as much help as possible.

Pepper Potts and Shuri to avenge the death of their loved ones?

Another scene in the trailer features Pepper Potts and Shuri running along with Dora Milaje. While both seem angry, Pepper carries a high-tech gun (See pic below).

With Pepper’s beloved Tony Strak and Shuri’s brother T’Challa being killed by Killmonger in Episode-6, the two might be looking for a revenge from their common enemy.

Fate of the Watcher and his future role

The finale is certainly going to be decisive if the fate of the Watcher is to be considered. With Ultron unleashing a brutal attack on the Watcher, he has to face Ultron at some point of time.

Fans have already witnessed in the last episode the magnitude of power Ultron possesses for having all six Infinity Stones. The mind stone-powered robot not only fought against the Watcher, but also dominated in the fight.

Another important aspect to be answered in the finale should be the Watcher’s oath to watch events of all universes and not to intervene ever.

As Ultron has disrupted the stability and balance of multiverse, the Watcher might opt to intervene. He has in a way already intervened by seeking help from Doctor Strange in the climax of the last episode.

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of  Madness’ connection

With ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ movie all set to explore the multiverse in a grand way for the first time in the MCU, it will be interesting to see whether the series concludes with any hint of having connection with the much awaited movie.

The series has already introduced two Doctor Strange– Doctor Strange and Doctor Strange Supreme– in one episode.
