Raped in Delhi, pregnant Odisha girl attempts suicide

Sambalpur: A 19-year-old girl of Odisha’s Sambalpur district, who was allegedly raped and impregnated by a youth in Delhi last year, attempted to commit suicide few days ago.

The victim, a resident of Kisinda area in the district, was staying in Delhi and working as a domestic at a person’s house in Noida last year. During the period, a youth established physical relation with her on the  pretext of marrying her.

Later, the girl was found pregnant and disengaged from work by the employer. She had then returned to her village in Sambalpur.

On January 13, she consumed poison in a bid to end her life fearing social stigma. She was rescued by her family members and admitted to VIMSAR in Burla. During treatment on January 15, she gave birth to a premature baby boy who died after the delivery.

No police complaint has been lodged by the parents of the girl in this regard.
