Yet another debt-ridden farmer ends life in Odisha

Bhadrak:  A farmer hanged himself to death due to crop loss and loan burden at Pandado village under Agarapada police limits in Bhadrak district yesterday.

The deceased has been identified as Gayadhar Das (42), a sharecropper.

Sources said Gayadhar had cultivated crops on 12 acres land, including one acre of his own by taking loans from private money lenders. However, Gayadhar incurred a heavy loss as his crops were damaged due to pest attack.

Burdened by the loans, the farmer committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree at Palasbani yesterday, said a family member of the deceased, adding that Gayadhar was the sole breadwinner of the family.

On receiving information, police reached the spot and sent the body to hospital for post-mortem.
