Odisha farmers’ body to go on ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation from Mar 29

Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NKS), an outfit fighting for farmers’ rights in Odisha, on Friday has once again threatened to launch a ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation from next month, if their demands are not met.

The outfit has decided to stage another state level farmers’ convention on March 29 and go for a ‘Jail Bharo’ agitation, if the state government does not fulfill their demand.

The state government is not keen to address farmers’ issues, alleged Ananta Kishore Bhuyan during its preparatory meeting held yesterday.

Among others, Akshaya Kumar, Convenor, NKS, Associate Convenor Seshadev Nanda and Nimain Ray, Convenor, Jajpur district discussed on various farmers’ issues in the state.

Notably, the Navnirman Krushak Sangathan had staged a protest march on February 17 and 18 demanding pensions, compensation, irrigation in the state, agricultural infrastructure development and easy loan facilitation to farmers.

Besides, the farmers have also been demanding payment of compensation to kin of farmers that committed suicide, implementation of pension scheme for farmers, better procurement facilities, higher minimum support price, better social recognition and drought compensation among others.
