Surgery of Odisha’s conjoined twins Ganga-Jamuna not possible now

Cuttack: The surgery of Nayagarh conjoined twins Ganga-Jamuna, who are undergoing treatment at Sishu Bhawan here, is not possible at present, informed the hospital authorities.

As the health condition of the twins joined at stomach is not improving, their life is the first priority for the doctors, said that authorities in a press conference yesterday.

However, the doctors could think of conducting surgery for separating the twins after their weight rises to 9 kg. Currently, the twins weighed at around 5 kg.

Following the successful surgeries of Kandhamal coinjoined twins Jaga-Kalia at AIIMS in New Delhi, everyone’s eyes are now on Ganga-Jamuna, who share one heart and one liver since their birth.

The twin girls have one heart and one liver and their intestine has been divided, a team of doctors treating Ganga-Jamuna told media.

As such case is very rare among 1.5 lakh infants, 60% babies die in mother’s womb and 30% die a day after birth. The remaining 10% conjoined twins die within a year of their birth, said Sishu Bhawan Superintendent Dr Saroj Satpathy.

On the other hand, Dr PK Jena, who heads the team, said that it was not possible to separate the twins through surgery. In some case the twins are separated, they die within few days.

Now it is our duty to keep the conjoined twins alive, he added.

Notably, the conjoined twins were born to Kishore Dutta and Sumitra Dutta of Khalipatana of Sarankul at a private clinic on Dec 1 in Nayagarh district.
