CBI arrests Rourkela HPO assistant postmaster including postal agent in bribery case

Rourkela: An assistant postmaster identified as Biswaranjan Behera was arrested today by a team of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sleuths for taking a bribe. A postal agent identified as Bimal Kumar Muduli was also held in this connection.

Behera presently works in the Rourkela head post office (HPO) of the Sundargarh district. The 10-member team from Bhubaneswar caught the assistant postmaster red-handed.

According to a source, Behera had demanded a total of Rs 2 lakh and accepted a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a postal account holder Prabhasini Sutar through the agent Muduli for allowing her to withdraw from her own postal account around Rs 8 lakh towards accidental death claim of her husband.

Initially, Behera demanded Rs 2.5 lakh and Prabhasini settled it for Rs 2 lakh. Accordingly, as part of payment, she gave Rs 50,000 to the assistant postmaster leading to the arrests.

Simultaneous CBI raids were conducted later in the day at places linked to Behera and Muduli. The team led by DSP Dibakar Nanda and Inspector AK Nanda included some subordinate staff. Raids were underway till the time when this report was filed.
