Koraput witnesses 3,762 lightning in 30 minutes; close to all-time highest in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Koraput witnessed at least 3,762 lightning in 30 minutes today, after a sudden change in weather conditions around 2 pm. The lightning that occurred at different places in the district was close to the all-time highest in Odisha, the ‘Damini’ lightning alert app of the Central government said.

The lightning was reported mostly from Boipariguda, Koraput, Nandapur and Lamataput areas. The State has an all-time record of over 5,000 lightning occurring in a particular region in 30 minutes.

A mid-day bulletin of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre in Bhubaneswar had previously issued a Yellow Warning in this regard that read, “Thunderstorm with lightening very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Bolangir, Sonepur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.”

Notably, light to moderate rain or thunderstorm is very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of South Odisha and at one or two places over the districts of North Odisha, which has been forecasted with validity from 0830 hrs IST of 07.04.2023 to 0830 hrs IST of 08.04.2023.
