No role of FBI in Naba Das murder probe: BJP leader and former Odisha DGP

Bhubaneswar: Ruling out the need for an FBI probe, senior BJP leader and former Director General of Odisha Police Prakash Mishra today demanded a CBI investigation into former minister Naba Kishore Das’ murder who was allegedly shot by a policeman from point-blank.

Mishra alleged that police system in the State has collapsed due to gross indiscipline.

“Why the Government is silent on such a sensitive case and not revealing the motive of crime? The accused is a policeman, who is being tried in such a manner that he will be branded a mentally unstable person. Those responsible for manipulating the actual time of Naba Das’ death must be slapped with  Section 201 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC),” the former DGP said.

“As the process of investigation is under suspicion now, it should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for bringing the criminal to justice. The state Police Department needs an overhaul. Otherwise, the prevalent situation will give rise to the creation of several ‘Gopal Das’ in future. Police is a force and it works through right coordination of a chain of commands,” Mishra added.

Undoubtedly, Police Department has many efficient officials; but, loyalty to the ruling party and interference of the government has resulted in some policemen getting more than one charges at a time and some others getting none. This is not healthy for the department, the BJP leader stated.

Probe into the high-profile murder case is becoming murkier with every passing day, thereby stoking fuel to suspicion. State government has decided to seek help of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of United States after availing the services of Gujarat State Forensic Science Laboratory (GSFSL) and Directorate of Forensic Science Services (DFSS) in Gandhi Nagar, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bangalore, Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in New Delhi.

“Naba Das died after being shot at from a close range. The bullet lid has not been recovered yet, which had hit his left ventricle – a main part of the heart. Death in such cases is instantaneous. Das was initially rushed to Jharsuguda DHH for treatment. Later, he was airlifted to Bhubaneswar. It was during the late evening hours that the death of Naba Das was announced,” former DGP Mishra expressed.
