Odisha to raise special battalion for Puri Jagannath temple security
Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen patnaik has approved a proposal for creation of a dedicated Special Security Battalion for foolproof security and proper crowd management at Puri Jagannath temple.
The new battalion would have the primary responsibility of providing foolproof security to the temple and its personnel will be specially trained for better crowd management and tourist/devotee facilitation for hassle-free darshan, said the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in a statement today.
The Special Security Battalion would have around 1,190 personnel and it would be placed under the command and control of Puri district Superintendent of Police (SP), it added.
Notably, thousands of devotees from across the country visit the 12th century shrine to pay obeisance to Lord Jagannath.
Around 50,000 devotees usually visit Puri Srimandir on a day. The number doubles or triples during weekends, holidays and festivals, sources said.
The flow of devotees to the shrine is likely to go up further with the inauguration of Srimandir Heritage Corridor Project in January next year, said the CMO.
Notably, stampede-like situations are often reported from the temple during major festivals. Besides, women, children and elderly people often face inconvenience due to huge rush at the shrine.
