Odisha’s Mrutyunjay Mohapatra new DG of IMD

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has been named the Director General of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) today.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training, the Utkal University alumnus has been appointed as chief of the principal agency that makes weather forecasts and meteorological observations.

Mohapatra will take charge on Aug 1 for a five-year tenure. He was holding the post of ADG prior to this promotion.

The 53-year-old scientist hails from Bhadrak district in Odisha. He has an M.Sc in Physics and later joined the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Chandipur.

Affectionately called as the ‘Cyclone Man of India’, he is known to have precisely predicted the path of cyclones such as Phailin, Titli and Lubna.
