Trouble mounts for Odisha MP Bhartruhari Mahtab as charges framed in cop assault case

Cuttack: A special MP/MLA court in Cuttack today framed charges against MP Bhartruhari Mahtab for allegedly slapping an erstwhile police sub-inspector (SI) Amitabh Mohapatra on January 23, 2011. The MP had slapped while he was proceeding to attend a public meeting.

Mohapatra then lodged an FIR with Dargah Bazaar police and a case was registered against the MP. The former SI has presently been posted as an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

Police carried out investigation on the basis of the complaint filed by the police officer at Dargah Bazaar police station. The JMFC and designated court of Justice Deepankar Bal framed charges against the MP under Sections 341, 323, 294, 353 and 506 of the IPC.

Notably, the next date of hearing has been fixed for April 5, 2024.
