Odisha police nab four for looting jeweller

Commissionerate Police today nabbed four persons in connection with a gold jewellery snatching case from a jeweler near Pahala on the outskirts of the Odisha capital last Monday.

“Six unidentified persons robbed the complainant Banamber Manik of Tulasi Jewellery under Balianta police limits on September 14 at about 4.45 pm while he was returning from Cuttack carrying 500 grams of gold ornaments. The miscreants waylaid the complainant and threatened him to hand over the gold items near Kanhu Lenka Petrol pump besides National Highway 5,” Twin city Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr RP Sharma said.

“It was ascertained during investigation that Pintu Samal of Ganeshghat in Cuttack district, who is working as a goldsmith in an ornament workshop at Nayasadak in the same district from where the complainant regularly used to purchase gold ornaments, hatched a plan along with his associates to loot the jeweler. The mastermind, Pintu, and his brother Dipuna Samal arranged his friends Ehemat, Sonu, Jitu and Rinku to execute the plan,” Sharma said.

Last Monday, the accused followed Manik’s movement on two motor cycles after the latter left Cuttack with gold. They allegedly intercepted him near Pahala, snatched the valuables worth Rs 13 lakh and fled on the bikes.

During the course of investigation, the Balianta police arrested four persons– Niranjan Behera alias Sonu (23) of Rajhansa, Jitendra Dash (22) alias Jitu of Matagajapur, Subash Bahalia alias Rinku (22) of Balikuda, all from Cuttack district- in the case (235/2015) registered on the same day slapping charges under sections 395 of IPC. Of the accused arrested, Jitendra is a security guard working with Hunting Hawk security agency.

Searches are on to apprehend the mastermind Pintu and Ehemat of Matagajapur, who are still on the run, police said.

Meanwhile, police have seized gold ornaments weighing about 210 grams, one motor cycle used in the crime and one sword from their possession.
