Depression over Bay of Bengal: Here’s forecast track and intensity

Bhubaneswar: A low pressure area over northeast and adjoining areas of eastcentral Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh and Myanmar coasts concentrated into a depression over northwest and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal today early morning.

According to the IMD, the depression lay centered at 5.30 am over northwest and adjoining northeast Bay of Bengal about 310 km east-southeast of Balasore, 250 km east-southeast of Digha and 210 km east-southeast of Sagar islands.

It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a Deep Depression during next 06 hours. Continuing to move in the same direction, it is likely to cross West Bengal and Odisha coast between Balasore and Sagar islands around 17:30 hrs IST of today. After landfall it would continue to move west-northwestwards across north Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand towards north Chhattisgarh and weaken gradually.

With formation of Depression, the IMD issued Red warning for four districts of Odisha. As per weather forecast, Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) at a few places with isolated extremely heavy falls (>20cm) is very likely to occur over the districts of Keonjhar, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj today till tomorrow morning.

(Orange Warning): Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) very likely to occur at a few places over the districts of Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Bolangir, and Jajpur till Aug 20 morning.

(Yellow Warning): Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) very likely to occur at isolated places over the districts of Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khordha, and Puri till Aug 20 morning.

Wind Warning:

Squally wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph gusting to 65 kmph very likely over North Bay of Bengal and along & off West Bengal, Odisha & Bangladesh coasts during next 06 hours. It is likely to increase becoming 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph from noon till mid night of today over the same region. It would improve gradually becoming squally wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 65 kmph over Northwest Bay of Bengal along & off West Bengal and Odisha coasts from 20th morning for subsequent 24 hours.

Sea Condition: Sea condition is likely to be rough to very rough over North Bay of Bengal and along & off West Bengal, Odisha & Bangladesh coasts on 19th. Sea condition would gradually improve becoming rough over Northwest Bay of Bengal and along & off West Bengal & Odisha coasts from 20th August.

Fishermen Warning:

Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea along & off Odisha coast and North Bay of Bengal till 20th August, 2022.

Port Warning:

Local cautionary Signal No.3 (LC-3) at all ports of Odisha.
