Gobinda Sahu suicide case: Crime Branch re-creates scene at Kantabanji sub-jail

Bhubaneswar: A team of Odisha Crime Branch, accompanied by members of a scientific team from SFSL, Rasulgarh in Bhubaneswar, today re-visited the Kantabanji sub-jail in Balangir district as part of its investigation into the alleged suicide of Gobinda Sahu, the prime accused in teacher Mamita Meher murder case, inside the prison on December 20.

The team visited the spot as part of its effort to understand the circumstances and sequences that led to Sahu’s alleged suicide inside the prison, sources said.

“The team re-created the scene with the help of a person who is approximately of same age and weight as the deceased. A similar wooden log and gamucha (cotton towel) were used in the exercise,” said a senior official of the Crime Branch.

The team also seized DVDs containing photographs and videos of inquest and post-mortem of the deceased from the Scientific officer at DFSL, Balangir, along with Certificate U/s 65-B (4)(C) Indian Evidence Act, 1872. It also examined the inmates of the jail as part of the investigation into the alleged suicide case.

“A team of the Crime Branch along with the forensic experts is now camping at Kantabanji to expedite the probe. CID-Crime Branch IGP AN Sinha is also camping at Kantabanji to monitor the investigation,” said the official.

Sahu was reportedly found hanging from the iron railing of the jail kitchen with a cotton towel on December 20.
