Patient critical after wrong blood transfusion in Odisha hospital

Bhubaneswar: A patient was allegedly transfused with a different blood group at Odisha’s Gajapati District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) today.

Venkateswar Behera (39), an employee of SKCG Autonomous College at Paralakhemundi, has been admitted to the DHH for treatment of piles.

Behera was transfused with two units of O+ve blood in the last two days. However, he received a unit of B+ve blood instead of O+ve at the DHH today, sources said.

Behera experienced rigor and discomfort when the different blood group was being transfused. His relatives immediately informed the incident to a nurse. Soon, the blood transfusion was stopped and a doctor was called in, sources added.

The DHH authorities immediately formed a team of doctors to treat Behera, who turned critical due to the transfusion of different blood group.

“The patient’s condition is stable now. All his health parameters are found to be normal. He is under constant observation. We will refer him to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur if there is any deterioration in his health condition,” said District Medical Officer (DMO) Pramod Kumar Panda.

The DMO further said they have launched a probe into the incident. “We are probing the incident. This could be due the mistake of the staff nurse. We will fix the responsibility and take stern action in this regard,” he added.
