While some of the village youths were seen giving coconut and bananas to the bear, most of the local residents panicked and preferred to stay indoors and not step out.

Nuapada: Panic prevailed after locals spotted a bear wandering in the streets in search of food in Godaphula village of Sadar block in Nuapada district of Odisha on Friday.

Sources said the bear had strayed from the Saliha forest nearby. The jungle had been declared a corridor for bear movement by the Forest department. But the fence along the stretch had been broken which allowed the bear to stray into the village in the vicinity in search of food.

While some of the village youths were seen giving coconut and bananas to the bear, most of the local residents panicked and preferred to stay indoors and not step out.

Till reports last came in, the bear was still wandering in the streets in the area.

Meanwhile, villagers of Godaphula, who claim that they often spot bears in their neighbourhood in close proximity, urged the Forest department and the district administration to take stock of the situation and regulate the movement of wild animals to ensure their safety.

Nuapada district is known for its dense bear population and sighting of the wild animals in human settlements is reportedly a regular affair here.
