Bizarre! Body of deceased exhumed for insurance claim in Odisha’s Jajpur

Jajpur: In a bizarre turn of events, body of a deceased person was exhumed from burial ground in Odisha’s Jajpur district on Sunday for the purpose of insurance claim. The incident took place at Purunapani village under Sukinda police limits in the district.

As per reports, one Prahlad Nayak had died in a road accident on December 7. The family members brought Nayak’s body from Sukinda Community Health Centre and buried it without the standard post-mortem procedures.

Upon learning that post-mortem report was prerequisite for insurance claim, Gita Nayak, the wife of the deceased, informed the police about the situation. The police, in the presence of Sukinda Tehsildar Damayanti Sahu, exhumed the body.

It was later taken to hospital for autopsy.

“The family members of the deceased had brought the body from Sukinda hospital without adhering to proper procedures or informing the police. Nayak’s wife later lodged a complaint, asserting that her husband died after being hit by an unidentified vehicle. In response to the complaint, police unearthed the body and transported it for a thorough post-mortem examination,” the Tehsildar said.
