IT raid on liquor traders in Odisha: Over 200 crore cash seized so far

Bhubaneswar/Balangir: The Income Tax Department continued to raid the liquor traders for the second day in Odisha with the seizure of over 200 crore cash so far.

The IT officials conducted raids on properties including houses and liquor manufacturing units belonging to Raj Kishore Sahoo and Debraj Sahoo simultaneously at various places in Bhubaneswar, Sundargarh, Rayagada, Boudh and Titilagarh, on charges of evading income tax.

Sources said that the officials unearthed a total of 220 crore cash (bundles of Rs 500 denominations) from their residences and country liquor shops during searches so far. The cash was sent to banks in two trucks for counting.

The simultaneous raids are underway at 20 places in Odisha, 2 places in Jharkhand and 2 places in Kolkata.

Along with two businessmen of Sundargarh district, the raids were also carried out at office and residences of one more liquor trader namely Kameswar Tiwari in Rourkela.

Many documents are stated to have been seized by the raid team from office and houses of Tiwari at Civil Township area in the Steel city.
