Maoist attack: Fugitive undertrial prisoner arrested again in Odisha’s Gajapati district

Mohana: A prison escapee identified as Purna Chandra Bisoyi was arrested again by a team of police today from Mohana locality of Gajapati district.

According to a senior police official, the fugitive undertrial prisoner (UTP) from Malaspadar village of the district had escaped from jail custody on 24 March 2006. He was earlier lodged in R Udayagiri jail in connection with a case over a family feud. On the intervening day, a group of Maoists attacked the jail and a local police station. The ultras broke open the jail gate to release some of their colleagues. Taking advantage of the attack by red rebels, Purna Chandra managed to flee from custody.

Acting on a tip-off that Purna Chandra was present somewhere in a locality called Kirama, Mohana police raided leading to the arrest of the escapee UTP, the senior police official said.

Some other inmates in the jail had also run away, which had hogged the media headlines.
