Mohan Charan Majhi to be new CM of Odisha, announces BJP

Bhubaneswar: Putting all speculations to rest, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today announced Mohan Charan Majhi as the new Chief Minister of Odisha a week after victory in 2024 elections.

The BJP legislators elected the Keonjhar MLA as the new Chief Minister of Odisha at the Legislature party meeting held at 4.30 pm in the presence of BJP’s central observers Rajnath Singh and Bhupinder Yadav at the party’s state headquarters in Bhubaneswar.

At the meeting, KV Singhdeo and Pravati Parida were announced as the two deputy chief ministers of the state.

Earlier in the day, Rajnath Singh and Bhupinder Yadav had held a one-to-one meeting with elected BJP MLAs and MPs at a hotel in Bhubaneswar.

The four-time MLA Mohan Charan Majhi will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Odisha in a grand oath-taking ceremony, which will be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi tomorrow. The ceremony is scheduled to be held at 4.45 pm on June 12 at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar.

The BJP swept the elections this year gaining the simple majority to form the government for the first time in Odisha. The saffron party won 78 Assembly seats in 147-member Assembly, garnering 20 Lok Sabha seats from Odisha in the General Elections 2024.

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) that ruled Odisha for last 24 years under leadership of Naveen Patnaik lost the polls with only 51 Assembly seats, failing to gain a single Lok Sabha seat in the elections.
