Odisha parents die by suicide after daughter’s inter-caste marriage

Maniabandha (Cuttack): A couple died by suicide after their young daughter eloped with her lover from a different caste and married him.

The incident was reported from Maniabandha village under Badamba Block in Cuttack district.

According to reports, Nityananda Mohapatra and his wife Shantilata consumed poison on Saturday as they were unable to accept their daughter’s decision for inter-caste marriage.

The police reached the house and sent the bodies for post-mortem.

“A case of unnatural death has been registered. The investigation is in progress. The bodies have been sent to Badamba CHC for autopsy following which the cause of death can be ascertained,” informed Kadamibini Parida, IIC, Maniabandha PS.

The locals said that the couple took the extreme step because they were devastated after hearing that their daughter married a person outside their caste.

“There was disturbance in the family. Their neighbours found that the door was closed till late hours in the morning. When they opened the door, found the couple was sleeping on the bed. As they did not wake up, the neighbours checked them and found them no more,” said a relative of the deceased couple.
