10-day-old boy sold for Rs 10,000 rescued in Odisha Capital; one held

Bhubaneswar: A baby boy, who was allegedly sold to a woman for Rs 10,000, was rescued in Bhubaneswar today.

The Childline officials with the help of local police rescued the 10-day-old boy from the woman’s house near Malisahi area in the city. The woman, Samerun Bibi has been detained at the Capital Police Station while the baby boy was handed over to the Childline.

Bibi said Rs 10,000 were given to a nomad woman after she demanded the amount to hand over the infant.

“The nomad woman was crying and begging outside houses near railway station. Out of compassion, I enquired about the reason. She said the baby’s father was asking her to throw the infant in a dustbin as they did not have money to sustain themselves.

“When I asked the nomad woman to hand over the baby so that I could raise the child, she agreed. However, the nomad woman demanded Rs 10,000 as a condition to hand over the baby. After I gave the amount to her, she gave me the child at my house,” added the buyer.

The matter came to light after a video of a man telling that a woman came to him and his wife and forcibly took their 10-day-old child after giving them Rs 10,000.
