Family in Odisha tensed as it loses contact with daughter in Kabul

Bhubaneswar: These are testing times for Juhura Begum and her family of Motijeera area in Odisha’s Sambalpur district as the elderly woman has lost contact with her daughter, who resides in Kabul, for the last 2 months.

With the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, woes have only increased for Juhura who has not seen her daughter Shakila Bano for 14 years.

Shakila got married to Ataullah Khan of Kabul, 14 years ago in Sambalpur. Khan had come to the western Odisha town for business purpose at that time, during which a relationship developed between the two and it led to the marriage. Later, Khan shifted to Kabul along with his wife.

“While leaving Sambalpur, my son-in-law had promised me to return with my daughter after several months. Though 14 years have passed since then, the two have not returned. I was in regular touch with my daughter through telephonic and video calls. However, she is now incommunicado,” said Juhura.

“With the recent situation in Afghanistan, I am worried about my daughter’s safety. I hope she returns home safely,” she added.
