Monsoon likely to be delayed in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: With the state is boiling in extreme sun heat during the summer, the monsoon is likely to be delayed to reach Odisha this year.

As per the IMD prediction, the monsoon is expected to hit Kerala coast on June 6. Gradually, it will move towards south and central regions of the country.

“The monsoon has already affected south Arabia Sea, south part of Bay of Bengal, Andaman Nicobar Island and Andaman Sea. It is likely to reach Kerala nearly on June 6,” said IMD’s director general, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

Though the usual arrival time of monsoon is June 10 in Odisha, with its delay in Kerala, it is further likely to be delayed to touch Odisha coast this year, he said.

However, the thunder shower ahead of the monsoon is bringing some relief from the scorching heat.

“People are experiencing nor’wester rain in some parts of the state. The heavy rainfall was also recorded in the past 24 hours adjacent to the coastal districts including Keonjhar and Dhenkanal. The pre-monsoon thunderstorm will continue in the coastal areas for the next 3-4 days,” the senior weather scientist said.
