Odisha: Brown sugar worth over Rs 1 cr seized; woman among 4 arrested

Bhadrak:  In a major drug haul, Bhadrak Rural police seized brown sugar worth over Rs 1 crore near Charampa in the district yesterday.

During enforcement of lockdown and COVID-19 safety norms, the Bhadrak Rural police intercepted an auto-rickshaw carrying four persons, including a woman near Charampa on NH-16 under Dhamra railway overbridge.

On being suspicious, the cops search the vehicle and recovered the contraband item weighing 1,090 gram along with Rs 1 lakh cash, three mobile phones and other incriminating articles.

During the interrogation, it was revealed that  accused Kunilata Sarangi (30), Manoj Kumar Das (23), Ajay Kumar Sarangi (32) had gone to Jaleswar by the autorickshaw and procured the contraband item from a drug supplier. The supplier also sent another man named SK Abdul Hamid (45) with brown sugar for its supply in Bhadrak and its periphery.

SK Abdul Hamid happens to be the brother of drug Mafia ‘Chachi’ of Jaleswar and father-in-law of the most-wanted SK Asgar of Jaleswar.

The 4 quadruples have been arrested under section 21(C) of NDPS Act. However, the Bhadrak police failed to nab the supplier. Further investigation is underway.
