Odisha: Notorious criminal held after police encounter in Cuttack

Cuttack: The Commissionerate Police managed to arrest a notorious criminal after he sustained bullet injuries in an encounter in the Silver City here today.

Injured criminal Deepak Nayak alias Shankar of Ranihat Gopalsahi has been admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital here, said a police officer.

On receipt of reliable information regarding possession and transportation of firearm by Nayak, a special squad of the Commissionerate Police intercepted him at Bhuasuni Gada at around 8.30 pm, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Pinak Mishra.

Nayak opened fire on police with and intention to kill the personnel and tried to escape, he said.

“Our officials resorted to controlled firing for their self defence. Nayak sustained bullet injuries in his left leg in the exchange of fire. Nayak is a history-sheeter,” said the DCP.

A gun and ammunition have been seized from Nayak, he added.

Nayak was involved in the murder of pulses trader Mohammed Farooq in Malgodown area of the city in November 2014, sources said.

He was also involved in several other crimes including illegal arms trade in Cuttack city, they added.
