Odisha: Youth attacks Berhampur SDJM with knife on court premises

The accused is currently detained by the police at Baidyanathpur station, and the reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. 

Berhampur: Berhampur Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Pragyan Paramita Pratihari had a narrow escape after she was attacked by a youth on the court premises in Ganjam district of Odisha here today. The accused, identified as Bhagaban Sahu of Old Berhampur has been detained at Baidyanathpur police station.

As per reports, a court hearing was underway at around 3 pm in the afternoon when when the accused suddenly made an attack bid. He reportedly climbed up the dais in an agitated state and charged towards the SDJM with a knife. However, his bid was foiled as one of the sanitation staff Shankar Rao, who was engaged in the court,rushed to the judge’s rescue just in time and halted him.

Meanwhile, the SDJM managed to jump from the dais and leave the place with help from one of the lawyers Mrutanjay Maharana and a female court staff. Other court employees gathered by then and handed the accused to the police.

On getting information, Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M and SDPO reached the spot immediately to take stock of the situation. While the accused is currently detained by the police at Baidyanathpur station and is being interrogated, the reason behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. The incident has shockwaves in the area while raising serious questions on the security arrangements on the court premises.
