Odisha’s Koraput witnesses record 5,395 lightning strikes in 7 mins

Koraput: Inching closer to a record-high figure, Odisha’s Koraput witnessed 5,395 lightning strikes in just seven minutes in various parts of the district on Friday morning. After a sudden change in weather conditions with rainfall and thunderstorm since last three days, lightning occured at different places of the district and was more than all-time highest in Odisha, the Central government’s lightning alert app ‘Damini’ revealed.

The lightning was reported mostly from Boipariguda, Koraput, Jeypore, Semiliguda,Nandapur and Lamataput areas.Earlier, the State had an all-time record of over 5,000 lightning occurring in a particular region in 30 minutes but lightning witnessed in Koraput today has surpassed the figure. As MeT department has issued yellow warning to Koraput for the next two days, there’s possibility of the lightning figures rising, official sources said.

Meanwhile, the district administration is awaiting a report from the Emergency department for an impact assessment of the lightning strikes.

On April 8, Koraput had witnessed 3,762 lightning strikes and around 2,573 times in a particular area of the district.
